Digital Lighting and Rendering

Sat Jul 11, 2009, 1:52 AM
"Digital Lighting and Rendering" by Jeremy Birn is a book I just got from the mail the other day (it's the second edition one.) So far I've only had the time to read about 50 pages of it and I'm already learning so much stuff from it.

If you are a serious 3D artist, I urge you to read this book. It's a tad expensive, but it's worth every penny.

It was only listed as "recommended reading" for my Materials and Lighting class but quite honestly, it should have been mandatory. It covers all sorts of knowledge from film lighting, 3D lighting regardless of packages, etc... It explains how lighting works from an artist standpoint and what you can do to simulate it for whatever feel you're going for (dunno about you, but I'm sure as hell listening to advice from a technical lighting director from Pixar.)

Even if you don't want to do 3D lighting for a living, all of this information is important to know: a good teacher of mine once said that even if you're just doing a 3D modeling portfolio, if the lighting setup is crap then it's going to make your models look horrible (briefly put: you're still going to be jobless.)

You know what you must do, fellow-3D-artists-who-still-don't-understand-jack-about-lighting! :XD:

This is why there is no such thing as perfect. A flawless beauty would be blank without any appeal nor character. Its scars are what defines it and what inspires emotion... from that moment, it becomes art.

I have no idea what movie it is. You're going to have to ask him yourself. Sorry. XD (I'm not even sure if that guy even has a working website.)

Well, he made an animated 3D video, and it was all awesome and stuff and he's all proud of it, but I figured that he used free models from the internet. :P

Maybe he used some free rigs? He hasn't shown it to me.

Perhaps its the way themanoman presented jeroen to me, but this is kind of a anti-climax for me. :P

Excellent 3D model work. I've been working on my Game Art and Design Degree for the past 3 years...and honestly I haven't spent near enough time working on my modelling skills. I've managed to create one decent looking model in 3Ds Max. I think I'm just going to try for a level design job and go from there once I get that degree.
What a coincidence: I'm on my third year of Game Art and Design at the Art Institute of California in Orange County. I'm orienting my work much more towards 3D art as you can tell (I just paint for shits and giggles), aiming more specifically towards 3D game environments (am currently working in both Unreal and GECK editors.)

Level design is awesome though, I'm taking that class right now (even though I'm not really good at it.) What kind of games are looking forward to designing?

I'm attending the Art Institute of Pittsburgh Online. As far as games I want to design, well, naturally since I'm a big geek I want to create a RPG. I've had this idea that I've been developing off and on since I started school, but I haven't really touched it much lately. I also have a few ideas for Action games based on my superhero concepts.

Overall, I think I'll be happy once I can just get something done and published, even if I just worked on one particular thing. I'll be able to sit back and say, "That building there...yeah...I made that one" lol.
Cool beans, I wish you the best of luck with your program. If you need anything, feel free to ask: I'll gladly help out in the best way I can.

Long time no speak indeed! (I assume that you were busy with your con and all.) I'm glad to hear that everything is going well on your side, I've been quite busy myself cranking out work... but it's all good, considering that my classes this quarter are much more game-oriented (next quarter is going to be even more hell though... scripting, yuck.)

Cheers to you Wade-o!
